Always remember that measurements matter so make sure you have them dialed before you actually started drilling. You may have made perfect holes. For sure you hear it a lot and perhaps more often than you want to that at times it can get irritating. But most definitely not as much as you  need to: people telling you how to use a particular tool.

I understand that it can really annoying as if people think you don’t know anything about the tool you have on your hand. When using the core drill, for example, it is very important that you have a good, working knowledge of it. Otherwise, you are just increasing the probability of an injury tenfold. Bear in mind that there are injuries that can be fatal. You may think it is just a core drill and a diamond core bit, but really, a professional understands the risks.

When drilling, please do yourself, the tool, and the people around you a favor and heed these tips:

• Before starting any operation, be sure that the diamond core bit is properly fitted into the drill. If not, it may cause unimaginable problems.  

• Always wear the proper safety gear and equipment. This one advice can save people from any injury. Be sure you are wearing safety eyewear, footwear, head  and hearing protection, and some fitted clothing,

• When cutting or drilling a hole, be sure to start slowly. Do this before putting added pressure when you are already into the cut. Be sure that the pressure is controlled at all times. A good grip of the drill will do the trick. Avoid unnecessary movements when you are already in operation.

• When the blade is already working its way to the hole, never stop the water flow. Just do not interrupt the rotation of the blade.

If during operation the speed at which the blade cuts decreases, then stop and check for problems. If you spot any problem, then you must discontinue working and take a look at any damage if there is. Be sure you have it fixed before using it again. If it needs to be replaced, then don’t push it and just have it replaced.

You will know this by personally asking the store staff or calling the manufacturer or dealer. 

Of course the manual is there for you to read, and when I say read you don’t just skim and do things as you know you should. I mean read thoroughly and examine. Everything you have to know about the tool is right there. It may even include pointers and recommendations for different projects. Proceeding to use the diamond core bit with little knowledge is just not right.

Irrigation is very important when using a diamond core bit. You use water as a coolant so the diamond segments don’t overheat. You do it constantly in operation. The water’s job is to disperse the dust and other particles out the drill hole. Dust buildup can cause the diamond core bit to wear out so by using water, you are actually prolonging the life of your tool. 

Different jobs require different amounts of water. For vertical drilling, less water may be needed, as opposed to horizontal drilling for the reason that water flows straight out the drill hole. For drilling a hole in a relatively short period of time, as in a reinforcing steel, you also do not need as much water because on this case, water is generally needed almost entirely for cooling, not for dispersing dust.

How to Drill a Hole in Ceramic Tile

Drilling a hole in a ceramic tile could be a tough task. If you have no background in such job you might want to ask the help of one who could do it correctly. But it’s very much doable of course. If you follow this step-by-step guide, you’d be surprised you can actually do the job on your own.

As with any home improvement job, safety should be of utmost concern. In drilling a hole in ceramic tile you’re gonna need protection. You will need eye protection which can be bought at any hardware. Any store that sells diamond core bit (which you’re gonna need for this task) should also have safety goggles. Of course you will also need a drill. 

Steps in Drilling a Hole in Ceramic Tile

Step 1

First thing to do is to make sure that you have a level surface so the drilling will be smooth and easy. To be sure you will need to clean the surface. If you spot crack then you may have a little problem with drilling. Otherwise you should be good to go.

Step 2

Step 4

Get some water and seep some on the core bit. A small towel placed underneath should take in the liquid.

Step 5

You may now start drilling. Do it at low speed to prevent cracks from building up. Some people make the mistake of pushing a little too hard. Especially for first timers, you should be extra careful. If you’re not careful you will not only create unwanted cracks; you may also make the hole bigger than intended. For this, a little patience should do you good. A little caution: first timers may need more than the others. Talking about patience.

Metallic and Non-Metallic Roofing Materials: The Showdown

Roofs usually come in two kinds of material classifications: Those that are made of metallic materials and those that are made from non-metallic materials.  Traditional roofing materials are usually non-metallic, ranging from wood and clay to asphalt and ceramic.  They are usually thought to be more romantic and aesthetically pleasing, and are usually used for residential buildings.  On the other hand, metallic roofing materials look more industrial and practical, with their uses commonly restricted to commercial and industrial settings.

Metallic roofing materials usually come in standing seams and lap joints, although these days, they have also come in the form of shingles wherein they are made to look like traditional non-metallic roofing materials like ceramic or clay tiles or wood shakes.  These latter designs have made metallic materials look more pleasing, so they can look more appropriate for houses and other residential structures.

The standing seam type of roofs is usually used in commercial structures and utilizes clips for attachment.  Since they look nice, this is now commonly used in houses as well, especially on porches and awnings.  On the other hand, lap joint metallic roofs are getting popularity because they are easier to install and they cost less than standing seam roofs.   The cost of lap joint material is comparable to other non-metallic materials such as fiberglass.

The rising popularity of metal as a material in new roofs can be attributed to their long life expectancies and their environmental friendliness.  Comparing non-metallic and metallic roofing materials will show that the latter is more ‘green’ because aside from being more durable, they are also more lightweight, fire resistant, more capable of reflecting heat, more resistant to tearing and wind damage, recyclable, non-polluting and can be installed over existing roofs .

They are more cost-efficient as an old roof doesn’t need to be torn down if metallic material is to be installed.  Because of their high resistance to wear and tear, the cost of roof repairs is also minimized.

Equipment such as diamond blades can easily cut through both metallic and non-metallic roofing materials, but in terms of precision, obviously non-metallic materials are more expected to produce some sort of residue even when cut by the most advanced tools available. Take note, though, that homes that want to imbibe a wooden cabin, chalet, or cozy look through wooden shingles would need carbide saw blades for precise cutting.

Metallic materials for the roof also have a few drawbacks.  For one, they can be noisy, as hail, rain, and falling objects can create a ruckus when falling on metallic roofs that do not have insulation.  Speaking of noise, high temperatures may cause the metallic material to pop, which causes a noise that can bother some people.

Hail may also dent metallic roofs that are not that strong.  Alas, not all local contractors may be expert in installing metal roofing or in using advanced tools like diamond blades, and familiarity with its installation and usage of advanced equipment are a huge advantage for an outstanding metal roof to be properly installed.

However, weighing the good and bad in metal roofing will show that the pros (longevity, environmental friendliness and costs) weigh the cons.  For homeowners who want more endurance and permanence in their homes, metal roofing may be considered the best option with a matching lower cost in maintenance.  The initial investment may be a bit more than non-metallic materials, but the benefits in the long run makes metallic roofs worth considering.
