Essential Core Drilling Techniques

For sure you hear it a lot and perhaps more often than you want to that at times it can get irritating. But most definitely not as much as you  need to: people telling you how to use a particular tool.

I understand that it can really annoying as if people think you don’t know anything about the tool you have on your hand. When using the core drill, for example, it is very important that you have a good, working knowledge of it. Otherwise, you are just increasing the probability of an injury tenfold. Bear in mind that there are injuries that can be fatal. You may think it is just a core drill and a diamond core bit, but really, a professional understands the risks.

When drilling, please do yourself, the tool, and the people around you a favor and heed these tips:

• Before starting any operation, be sure that the diamond core bit is properly fitted into the drill. If not, it may cause unimaginable problems.  

• Always wear the proper safety gear and equipment. This one advice can save people from any injury. Be sure you are wearing safety eyewear, footwear, head  and hearing protection, and some fitted clothing,

• When cutting or drilling a hole, be sure to start slowly. Do this before putting added pressure when you are already into the cut. Be sure that the pressure is controlled at all times. A good grip of the drill will do the trick. Avoid unnecessary movements when you are already in operation.

• When the blade is already working its way to the hole, never stop the water flow. Just do not interrupt the rotation of the blade.

• Never ever force the core bit into the material. This is important advice also if you are using other tools like the diamond blade.

If during operation the speed at which the blade cuts decreases, then stop and check for problems. If you spot any problem, then you must discontinue working and take a look at any damage if there is. Be sure you have it fixed before using it again. If it needs to be replaced, then don’t push it and just have it replaced.

Drilling a Hole through a Brick Wall is Easy!

There’s a variety of reasons why you have to drill a hole through a brick wall. You may do it for your cable requirements for your satellite dish or outdoor speaker, perhaps to install a door or another window.

For whatever reason, you need to do it in a smooth, precise way. For this, your tool is a diamond core bit. But before you get on with drilling, there are a few things you need to know. Below are some pointers, along with a step-by-step guide on how to drill a hole through a brick wall. For this you need preparation, focus and a little patience.

Step-by-step Guide on Drilling a Brick Wall: 

First thing to do is to find out what is behind the brick wall. You don’t wanna mess up anything that could be lying behind it such as pipe or any kind of metal or wiring. By pushing through without checking, you may only be doing damage to it. If available, check the floor plan to be sure.

Now comes the planning. Before marking the brick wall with chalk, figure out the dimensions. Be sure you know how big the hole you need is, depending on what you will use it for. You really need to be precise on this one so double-checking would be a great idea.

Do the marking. Since you are doing it on a brick wall, the chalk is your best option for a marker. You may need to check the dimensions again for good measures. Another reason why you should use chalk is that you can easily erase it if you make any mistake in marking.

Before moving on to the drilling, be sure you have safety gears – gloves, goggles, and respiratory mask are good enough.

Now you are ready to drill a hole in the brick wall. Do your drilling in the mortar because it’s easier to do it there as opposed to the brick itself. The plunge cut is the way to go. Start cutting near the middle of any of the vertical lines you made. When cutting, ensure that you are able to cut just a little inside the chalk lines. This is to ensure that you won’t damage the bricks as you go along.

Time to clean up. If you weren’t able to completely cut through, you can do the finishing by using a hammer and chisel. When you’re done, be sure the hole is free of debris.

How to Drill a Hole in Ceramic Tile

Drilling a hole in a ceramic tile could be a tough task. If you have no background in such job you might want to ask the help of one who could do it correctly. But it’s very much doable of course. If you follow this step-by-step guide, you’d be surprised you can actually do the job on your own.

As with any home improvement job, safety should be of utmost concern. In drilling a hole in ceramic tile you’re gonna need protection. You will need eye protection which can be bought at any hardware. Any store that sells diamond core bit (which you’re gonna need for this task) should also have safety goggles. Of course you will also need a drill. 

Steps in Drilling a Hole in Ceramic Tile

Step 1

First thing to do is to make sure that you have a level surface so the drilling will be smooth and easy. To be sure you will need to clean the surface. If you spot crack then you may have a little problem with drilling. Otherwise you should be good to go.

Step 2

Surface is clean, you got your safety goggles on and you have a drill with the appropriate core bit for the job. Before you start drilling, get two pieces of wood which you will need to place underneath the tile you will work on.

Step 3

Now be careful: because of the smooth surface of ceramic tile, the core bit may produce some scratches. What you need to do is get a masking tape and make an “X” shape to the spot you want to drill to create the needed traction.

Step 4

Get some water and seep some on the core bit. A small towel placed underneath should take in the liquid.

Step 5

You may now start drilling. Do it at low speed to prevent cracks from building up. Some people make the mistake of pushing a little too hard. Especially for first timers, you should be extra careful. If you’re not careful you will not only create unwanted cracks; you may also make the hole bigger than intended. For this, a little patience should do you good.
