Most Visited Celebrity Mausoleums and Graves

We all know that Halloween is already over. However, dead celebrities never fail to tickle our absurd fascination and curiosity about the life that they lived. The grasping of interest becomes too unbearable, that we somehow harness a sense of disbelief and ought to visit the gravesite to see for ourselves that they’re indeed gone.

As a result, cemeteries suddenly become a hub for tourists, willing to travel elsewhere just to get a glimpse of the famed personality’s last resting place. It may be the aesthetics of today’s mausoleums – thanks to the advancement of power tools and diamond blades – that added to the already dazzling life story of these stars, that even in death, they’re still considered … Or maybe they’re just plain famous and influential. (Too bad, some of them are in pretty bad shape.)

Here are the 10 most visited celebrity gravesites in no particular order

Jim Morrison – 1943-1971
Gravesite: Pere-Lachaise Cemetery, Paris

Arguably the most visited celebrity gravesite, Jim Morrison’s resting place flashes an absurd irony of respect and well-appreciated nod for his contributions in music. The usual flowers and candles are often overshadowed by vandalism and often mistreatment of visitors and casual loiterers. The Lizard King’s gravesite has undergone a few transformations, including bust of the famed The Doors vocalist, which has been eventually defaced and stolen in the 80s... Twice!

Michael Jackson – 1958-2009
Gravesite: Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale

A well-deserved resting place for a King, Michael Jackson’s remains gravesite in Forest Lawn Glendale exudes elegance. And even afterlife, he still considered royalty. His body is entombed inside the cemetery’s luxurious and highly-guarded, Great Mausoleum, where he shares the VIP spot with other famed personalities, including fellow celebrity and friend, Elizabeth Taylor.

Elvis Presley – 1935-1977
Gravesite: Graceland, Memphis

Another King worthy of royal resting place. After his shocking death, Elvis Presley was initially buried in Forest Hills Cemetery in Memphis. But after attempts of stealing the king’s body, his family decided to transfer his remains to a place that’s very close to his heart… In Graceland. It may have been close to 40 years since the king has “left the building”, but a constant pack of  500,000 die hard fans still visit him annually.

Merv Griffin – 1925-2007
Gravesite: Westwood Memorial Park, Brentwood

TV veteran, Merv Griffin may not be as “big” as the others listed on this article, but he sure did made one last attempt of reassuring laugh. His headstone reads, “I WILL NOT BE BACK AFTER THIS MESSAGE.”, which is a simple knack to his usual spiel just before going on a commercial break. Merv’s gravesite is one of the most visited gravesites in Westwood Memorial, alongside Marilyn Monroe, Frank Zappa, Bette Page, Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon among others.

Ian Curtis – 1956-1980
Gravesite: Macclesfield Cemetery

Ian Curtis was one of rock’s most flamboyant vocalists that have gone too soon. After watching a Hezrog film and listening to Iggy Pop’s The Idiot, Ian decided to cut his life short, merely out of desperation to break loose. The Joy Division vocalist’s remains was cremated and buried in Masclefield Cemetery. His marker reads, “18-5-80 Love Will Tear Us Apart” as chosen by his wife, Deborah. In 2008, the marker was stolen, and was eventually replaced a month after.

Bruce Lee – 1940-1973
Gravesite: Lakeview Cemetery, Seattle

Bruce Lee shocked the world with his untimely death in 1973 due to allergic reaction from painkillers. His interment was attended by thousands of fans, friends, colleagues and other celebrities. His body was then returned to his wife, Linda’s hometown in Seattle. He was laid to rest in Lakeview Cemetery. The gravesite still attracts frequent visitors, most of them fans of the famed martial artist.

Marilyn Monroe – 1926-1962
Gravesite: Westwood Memorial Park, Brentwood

The sexiest woman of all-time was entombed in Westwood Memorial Park, as arranged by her second husband, Joe DiMaggio, as the bombshell’s foster parents was also laid to rest in the same cemetery. Monroe’s crypt is one of the most visited gravesites in Westwood Memorial, and it has said to be one of the most discolored and unhygienic due to frequent touching and kissing of the marker.

Johnny Cash – 1932-2003
Gravesite: Hendersonville Memory Garden, Tennessee

Legendary musician, Johnny Cash died of complications due to diabetes on Spetember 12, 2003. He was then laid to rest next to his beloved wife, June Carter, whom had died just for months prior. Their black granite headstone carries both their surnames, accompanied by famous lines from their respective hits, “Walk the Line” and “Wildwood Flower”. Fans frequently visit the site to pay their respects to the “Man in Black” and his lady.

John Dillinger – 1903-1934
Gravesite: Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis

Photo courtesy: Sean McKim via findagrave.com

John Dillinger may have been one of the untouchables back in his crime spree day, until he was shot in a nearby movie house in Chicago. That vulnerability still haunts the acclaimed bank robber from the day he was killed up to now. His funeral was attended by many spectators, all of whom wanted to get a hand of virtually any souvenir they could grab on at the gravesite. Today, John Dilinger’s marker was the forth replacement, still enduring torture from souvenir-crazed visitors.

John Bellushi – 1949-1982
Gravesite: Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts

Photo courtesy: Randy McCoy via findagrave.com

“I may have gone, but Rock and Roll lives on.” Indeed, John Bellushi was a rock and roll kind of comedy guy… And apparently, so did his fans. His gravesite at Martha’s Vineyard was constantly vandalized and trashed by fans visiting the Blues Brothers star. The recurring incident went too far, that his family and relatives decided to exhume his body and transfer it in an undisclosed location.

What Triggers Diamond Segment Loss

diamond-serment-loss
One of the things that indicate that your diamond blade is on its way to being worn out is the breaking of diamond blades. When this happens, there is a good chance your diamond blade will not properly, and trying to use it even further will only damage the material and even endanger you and the people around you as they have the tendency to fly out in the middle of an operation.

This is why you should be observant when it comes to the working state of the blade. Keep in mind that this tool is something essential, so you would want it to last, if possible, longer than advertised.

But how have those diamond segments really broken? When you know the answers, you will surely be more careful when using the blade. By the way, this breakage of the diamond segments is referred to as segment loss.

Insufficient water

When you are using the blade and the water is not enough, there is a strong chance the segments will get damaged. There should be sufficient water flowing through the sides. Otherwise, extreme will cause the breakage. Overheating is what causes the segment loss.

As for dry cutting, what causes the loss is the arbitrary use of laser-welded diamond blades. This is something you must be careful in the completion of your project. You have to be really sure you know how to use the blade for dry cutting.

Material slippage

Obviously, you have to be able to keep the material from slipping while you are in the middle of cutting. Be sure you are holding it properly in place. It must be well-secured so it wouldn’t be much of a problem.
If not, you will most certainly endanger your life and the people around you if you happen to be working in a place with other people. Just to reiterate, make sure the material is firmly secured.

Saw-related problems

Before you start any cut, you have to be perfectly sure that the blade is working well. As much as you have to check on your car everyday before you embark on a trip, so you should also need to check on your diamond blade to prevent any mishap and to lengthen the blade life.

You also need to check on the saw blade itself. If the blade shaft and/or the shaft bearings are worn, this will cause the blade to bounce up and down while you are working. Now this will definitely lead to segment loss. Be sure you have this problem covered by replacing the shaft/shaft bearings before using it. Other possible reasons of segment loss with regards to the saw itself being Improper mounting of the blade, foreign materials like sand trapped between the steel core and flange.

Increase in Jobs Seen in Irish Construction Sector

improve-putting-skills
A quick look at online job firms will readily yield an increase in jobs in the Irish construction sector. It is certainly a great development, as it only shows that the industry is in progress.

In the first quarter of 2014, it was reported that the number of jobs advertised online alone has increased by a good 5% parallel to the same time of the preceding year. Again, that is merely online. There are jobs that are being posted on the paper and other forms of media.

It may be a rather small increase, but the important thing is that the industry is thriving and it is safe to say that better things are ahead. It shows a lot of promise for an industry that a few years ago may not be as good as it is now. Quite truthfully, whichever way you look at it, a small rise is still a rise. But if you look into a much bigger picture, that percentage has all the potential to go a long way.

The increase in jobs opens doors for the different workers in the construction industry. The firms are now even more strict in hiring workers, which means they are trying to get only those that are fit for a specific position. The ones deemed more effective and efficient will get the jobs, thus making for a steady progress. Gone are the days when some knowledge of tools like a diamond blade or a diamond core bit is good enough to land you a job in the industry, as firms have presented a much better screening process.

According to Irishjobs.ie, the said rate of 5% is a decent leap from the preceding quarter’s 2%. But the construction industry is not the only one that has seen progress, as others have also been steadily rising Engineering, tourism, architecture, property, manufacturing, and production – things are certainly looking good for many businesses in this part of Europe.

If things are looking good for Ireland, global construction can only hope this success resonates to a much bigger scale. The good thing is that the UK generally has been experiencing a steady progress in construction, and the same goes for the United States. If things go well for these top economies, global construction may just experience a boom. Of course, this is something we are all hoping and praying for.

Drilling Holes in a Glass Block

When drilling a hole in different kinds of materials, the diamond blade is your tool. This holds true in glass, too. When drilling holes in a glass block, what you need is the right core bit for the job because like diamond blades, there is a wide variety of diamond core bits for different applications. For this you will need the help of the store personnel in your local store.

There are harder materials that the conventional bits cannot cut. Diamond core bits come to the rescue as it can cut much harder materials, the diamond being the hardest substance on the planet. The thing with glass blocks when drilling a hole is you have to make a good cut without damaging other parts of the glass, or worse, shattering it to pieces. If you have chosen the right diamond core bit, then you are now ready for the job.

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to drill holes in a glass block:

1.    Place the glass block on the operating surface of the drill press. With the power still off, lower the press. Make sure it is matched with the right spot on the block. This way you will have a solid grip to avoid spinning as you go on operating.

2.     Before you actually start your drilling techniques, first make a guide hole. This will ensure an accurate, cleaner hole. When you have made a guide hole, you are ready to drill.

3.    Time to turn the drill press on. Lower the core bit pointing to the glass block and make a small hole. Pull back the press and see if you are on the right track. Allow the core bit as well as the glass surface to cool down with some running water. This will also help eradicate harmful dust.

4.    Drill deeper to complete the hole. Do this by carefully lowering the press and steadily moving it through the glass block. Remove the press and turn off the drill when you are done. Repeat the process if you have to drill more holes. As with any project, remember to wear the necessary safety gears.

Always remember that measurements matter so make sure you have them dialed before you actually started drilling. You may have made perfect holes. But imperfect spaces will probably mean a waste of time. Remember this every time you are doing kind of project, or any project that involves measurements.

Must-have Tools for Home Repairs (part 2)

must-have-tools-part2
In the first part of this article, I enlisted tools that every household should own. The tools I included on that list are the following: hammer, screwdriver, stripper/wire cutter, vise grip, and handsaw. I also mentioned tools that are so useful they don’t even need to be part of the list, and they are the diamond blade and diamond core bit.

As promised, here are a few more all-important tools you should have in your collection:

Utility knife – As a boy scouts need it, so should every home owner. They are used in a variety of applications, from simple ones to more elaborate tasks. It can also serve as a substitute for other tools that you may not have in possession. There are now utility knives that have replaceable blades and most people I know have them. Surely, it is wise and practical to have this in your collection, too.

Tape measure – As a DIYer or even an ordinary homeowner that doesn’t have much knowledge about home repairs, you will find yourself dealing with measurements. With a tape measure, life would be easier. It helps you get precise measurements, and essentially make for a better project. A good tape measure is one that is easy-locking.

Chisel – While not as often-used as the previous tools, a chisel should serve you just right. The fact that it has many uses and can substitute to some tools for a certain use make a chisel part of this list. A little trivia: it is one of the oldest tools known to man and has served its purpose well since when it was invented. It can be used in woodworking, metalworking, etc.

Safety glasses – Why safety glasses? Well, as with any home repair task, you need to be safe, and a pair of safety glasses is your fundamental shield from injury. Without wearing safety glasses you are most definitely at risk. When doing any home repair job, safety should be of utmost concern. Safety first, so to speak. Invest in a good pair of safety glasses. After all, you can use it for almost any home project.

It is very important to have the tools available in your home. There are many other tools must-haves that aren’t part of this list. Be sure you have them, along with the knowledge of how to properly use them. Until next time, please keep it here.

Must-have Tools for Home Repairs - Part 1

must-have-tools-home-repairs
As a homeowner, you want to have tools readily available for any repair project. There are tools that are so useful they don’t even need to be on the list, like the diamond blade and diamond core bit.

The following tools should be a great investment:

Hammer – Really, I don’t know of any home that don’t possess a hammer. It is, after all, one of the most used tools in the box. Many projects involve the use of a hammer so it is definitely on top of the list. From simply woodworking that can be done by a single person for bigger projects like the renovation of your patio, a hammer should always come in handy.

Screwdriver – This is another tool that every household I know has in their collection. A screwdriver is either a flat head or a Phillips head driver, and they equally useful. They come in handy for any electrical work that involves nuts and bolts. Usually they are available in the set so you need not buy them separately. Also, electric screwdrivers are already available in the market today, so you may want to look at them.

Stripper/wire cutter – Another tool normally used for electrical purposes. You can actually strip wires using diagonal pliers, but there is actually a tool used for this very purpose. Using a stripper or a wire cutter is simply the way to go as they make the job much easier and faster.

Vise grip – Anything that needs stabilizing, the vise grip is the tool for the job. What it does is it acts as a clamp in that tightens the jaws of the tool against whatever it is you are working on so it doesn’t slip while you’re working on it. Vise grips make your work easier by holding things in place so you can focus on the task.

Handsaw – Another very common tool. It is also heavily used in woodworking. In fact, most woodworking projects cannot be done without a handsaw. Surely, there are electric saws available. But for home use, a handsaw should be more than good enough.

See, there are tools that you should have at home, it is a mortal sin to not have one. Be sure you have these readily available for your repair needs. In one of my future blog posts, I will show you more tool must-haves. All of these are a great investment, so if you have the money to spare, you might as well get the better-performing, although more expensive ones.

Alternatives to Buying a Place in the UK

Having your own place is certainly a reason for joy anywhere in the world. Many view it as a true determinant of success especially for young people. But many – especially after that big financial crisis – have looked into some alternatives of buying a place, and I have them listed down for you:

house

Flat-sharing

This is practiced in many parts of the UK, especially by the younger professionals. By sharing a flat, they are able to save up on expenses as they are distributed among the co-inhabitants. If you choose to live in a rather expensive place, then sharing would be a very good idea.

It would be good to share a flat with people you know and trust. Otherwise you may not feel secured. With people you know, it will be easier to talk about expenses. I know a friend who shares a flat with other friends and he says he contributes food and a small portion of the bills since he is the lowest earner among his flatmates, something they understand because they are friends. Being the one with some knowledge about home repair, he’s the one who buys the diamond core bit and do the job all the others may have passed over. Really, it all depends on your setup.

Become a property guardian

Because the task is to look after a property, in this case a house, you will be asked to live in that house. Many property owners view it as a cheaper alternative to security guards.

The owners could be out of the country, or simply has another property where they lay to rest at night. The other property then would need an inhabitant so people, especially bad elements, won’t think they are abandoned. The owners will then look for property guardians to help keep the property secure. Naturally, more guardians are needed for mansions and other big properties. Not only are they entitled to live in the place for the time being, they are also being paid, and that’s apart from their real jobs.

Or just live with your parents

Yes, you read that right: How about moving back home? Nothing wrong living with your parents or other family members as long as you are helping them with the finances.

It may not sound good to many, or perhaps could even be a subject of ridicule. But really, moving back to your home could help you a lot in fixing your finances. It help you save, something those who live outside of the house don’t have the luxury of. If your work is just near the house, how about staying there and not care about what people will say?

Be Safe When Dry-Cutting

There is always danger involved when cutting with any type of tool. Whether wet-cutting, or dry-cutting, the diamond blade is no exception.

be-safe-dry-saw-cutting

Wet-cutting is when you use diamond blades with sufficient water making a cut. Water is used to wash away the dust that could otherwise harm the body. It also extends the life of the blade. But at times where there is a shortage of water, you may still be able to cut. This is dry-cutting, and for the aforementioned reason, it calls for much caution. Other reasons for doing dry-cutting are: the workplace has to be kept dry, and when the use of water is prohibited as in electrical power tools. Truth is, dry-cutting even has advantages over wet-cutting: no need to clean slurry, you can actually make cleaner cuts, and of course, you can cut even without a reliable water source.

Here are a few pointers for when you have to use your diamond blade in the absence of water:

Get a blade that is made specifically for dry-cutting. Yes, there are diamond blades that are specifically made for dry-cutting, and this you have to ask the store personnel. The reason behind it is that water for water-cutting effectively cools the blade, and may ultimately weaken the blade. If the segments break off in the middle of an operation, the worker may get injured.

Dry-cutting entails a different kind of cutting. Naturally, the process of cutting will differ from wet-cutting. What you need to do is cut a portion at a time, and sporadically take the diamond blade out to let it cool down.

Never forget to wear the necessary safety gears and equipment. As I have highlighted countless times in the past (something I will never get tired of doing), always wear the proper safety gear when doing any type of work. When dry-cutting, for example, wear a respirator. Because of the absence of water to wash away dust, you will have to wear a respirator or face mask to avoid the inhalation of dust. Of course, dust inhalation can cause unimaginable health problems for you and the people around you.

Like I said, dry-cutting also has some advantages, and there may come a time when you really have to cut without water. I hope this blog helps to get you ready and keep you and your loved ones out of harm’s way.

Come on, Remodel that Kitchen

To many people, the kitchen is the most popular part of the house simply because it is where you dine. Some even call it the heart of the home. But really, there is more to a nice kitchen than just fulfilling your gastronomic cravings.

modern-kitchen-design

Indeed, whether a kitchen is big or small, you will see its importance at how people do everything to make it look good and presentable.

Here are a few reasons why many consider it the most important part of the house.

  • It is where meals are cooked.

Oh yes, and this should be high on the list. It is where we have a first look of the food before it is served on the dining table and to our body. For centuries, the kitchen essentially filled in the stomachs of friends and families the world over. It has not only fed tummies, it has, more importantly, fed minds and souls.

  • The kitchen offers therapy.

If a family member has some problem, he goes to the kitchen and put his hands on anything he can chew on. It may sound funny but really, this just shows the kitchen’s therapeutic abilities. It is capable of lifting people who are down. It provides comfort for people who need it.

  • It’s a good place to socialize.

Cooking can be a great bonding activity for families and friends. At times they gather around the kitchen and talk. Only a couple will do the cooking while the rest just stay there and talk. I would say a family that cooks together stays together, and would definitely say the same for friends.

  • The styling possibilities are endless.

Even if you are too fond of cooking, a nice-looking kitchen will say a lot about your personality. How proud you will be if you have a kitchen where your friends can go and just have some talk. If you have some remodeling to do, be sure you have the necessary tools like the diamond core bit. See if you have to do some remodeling or repair to make your kitchen look better, it will still incite some bonding moment.

There you go. That’s about how important the kitchen is to any home. If you are confident about how your kitchen looks, then you will have no problem letting people in. Hey the best kitchen can even serve as your additional receiving area.

Concrete Cutting Essentials

As you may already know, all diamond blades aren't created equal. There's a variety out there intended for different jobs. In cutting concrete, for example, you will need a specialized diamond saw blade.

concrete-sutting-diamond-blade

If you are set to cut concrete by using a diamond saw blade and isn't sure how to go about things, well here are some pointers:

The first and perhaps the most important thing is that you should first identify the type of concrete you will cut as there are different types of equivalent diamond saw blades. If cutting depth is around 4 inches or even deeper, then meeting the Rebars halfway is a good idea. For rebars, there are specific types of diamond blade you can use. The curing time must also be taken into consideration. Green concrete is more abrasive while cured concrete is different. Also, you need to look into the aggregate and the sand used in the concrete. These are vital in choosing the appropriate diamond blade to use.

Of course you need to choose the appropriate diamond blade. Know the diameters of diamond blades that your saw is able to accommodate. What else should match? The arbor hole on the blade and the arbor size of the saw blade. Keep these things in mind when choosing the right diamond blade when cutting concrete. Asking the store personnel is always advisable as they have a good knowledge of the tool.

Because you are cutting with a diamond blade, it is important to determine whether you are dry cutting or wet cutting. Remember to use sufficient water when wet cutting as it will take care of dust dispersal. By doing this, you are essentially prolonging the life of your diamond blade as well as decreasing the danger it poses to your health as well as those around you. It also makes cutting more efficient. If it is impossible to get water in the area you are in, then you have to resort to dry cutting. This can get shallow and irregular. It may take a few more passes than usual, if you are deep cutting.

Be sure you have these concrete cutting essentials dialed before actually doing it. It is just the absolute way to go. A lot has failed because of neglecting the basics, and really, lives have been endangered because of improper practice. Always make sure you have a good working knowledge of the tool you are about to use. For more tips, all you need to do is keep to this page.

Top Construction Jobs for 2014

The construction industry has showed much promise after experiencing a decline during the Great Recession. Today it continues to show great momentum and gives hopes to workers all across America.

A single construction project gives jobs to numerous people. This blog post is meant to encourage more people to get into construction by listing the available jobs there are in construction. These jobs also pay well and are highly sought after. Many companies are in dire need of them so those who are qualified just need to look around and see if a job vacancy is just around the corner waiting for them.

Jobs in Construction Industry

  • Construction Manager

One of the highest-paying of them all, the construction manager oversees everything from the planning and budgeting of a project to its full execution. As a construction manager, you will be dealing with everyone from the ground up, so to speak, so be sure you have the right type of attitude. A good understating of the construction industry, is of course, highly essential, and it’s for this reason why firms would most likely hire someone who has a degree in construction science or any related course, instead of just a business management guy.

  • Cost Estimator

As the title implies, a cost estimator deals a lot with numbers. For this reason, the job doesn’t exactly require manual labor but he certainly goes out in the sun on occasion. Budgeting is a cost estimator’s main concern so it is imperative that he has very good knowledge about financing, especially in a construction setting.

  • Skilled mason

Brickmasons and blockmasons are an important component of a construction project as these are jobs the call for very particular skills. A firm does not have time to rigorously train workers for specific jobs so it is understandable that they go for the skilled ones.

  • Carpenter

Carpenters are a versatile breed, and this is why there will always be room for carpenters in a construction setting. Perhaps this stems from the fact that it is one of the oldest, if not the oldest profession, in the construction industry. Because of their versatility, carpenters are seen as one of the more secure practitioners in the field of construction. The master carpenters earn a lot as attaining such level is nothing easy and takes years and years of experience.

  • Electrician

Just like a carpenter, an electrician looking to land a good-paying job should be highly skilled. An electrician that has amassed enough experience through apprenticeship and actual work should be good enough to get hired by the better firms. Of course, it is expected that he has a great understanding of tools like the diamond core bit.

How to Restore Glazed Over Diamond Blades

Some people, especially those who don’t have sufficient knowledge about tools like the diamond blade will readily throw the tool when they feel it’s damaged. That’s without even looking at wiser options like restoring it. Some don’t know how to, while some just don’t want to go through the hassles of restoration and don’t mind shedding a few bucks for a new one.

glazed-diamond-blade

Well, for those think other wise and opt to see first if their tool in their hand, particularly the diamond blade, may still be fixed or restored, before they throw it away. When your diamond blade stops working or when you feel that it is cutting more slowly than usual, then it is already worn out, if not glazed over.

If your diamond blade is really worn out, then you are left with no other choice but to replace it. There is just no way it can be restored. If you keep using a worn out diamond blade, you will endanger people’s lives, that’s if it is still usable. As we know, diamond blades that are worn out will not work properly, if at all. So when your diamond blade is worn out and terribly damaged, then don’t even think about using it and just purchase a replacement.

On the other hand, a diamond blade that is just glazed over, can still be used. As remedy, what you need to do is run it through an abrasive material. You probably have heard of someone say that when your blade is glazed over, all you need to do is “dress” it. This is the way to do it. Examples of abrasive materials are asphalt, garnet, and sandstone.

When the blade gets glazed over again, then “dress” it again. But keep in mind that repeatedly doing it will affect the performance of the blade, so have a good feel of your blade so you’ll know when enough is already too much. If you insist on dressing over and over again, the blade will cut more slowly and ultimately it will worn out faster than expected. Then a softer abrasive may be what is best when you are dressing your blade.

If you see yourself constantly dressing your blade, then you may need to do a little adjustment. For harder materials, a softer blade is more appropriate. The reason behind it is that hard materials cause blades with a softer bond to wear out faster.

Essential Core Drilling Techniques

For sure you hear it a lot and perhaps more often than you want to that at times it can get irritating. But most definitely not as much as you  need to: people telling you how to use a particular tool.

I understand that it can really annoying as if people think you don’t know anything about the tool you have on your hand. When using the core drill, for example, it is very important that you have a good, working knowledge of it. Otherwise, you are just increasing the probability of an injury tenfold. Bear in mind that there are injuries that can be fatal. You may think it is just a core drill and a diamond core bit, but really, a professional understands the risks.

When drilling, please do yourself, the tool, and the people around you a favor and heed these tips:

  • Before starting any operation, be sure that the diamond core bit is properly fitted into the drill. If not, it may cause unimaginable problems.
  • Always wear the proper safety gear and equipment. This one advice can save people from any injury. Be sure you are wearing safety eyewear, footwear, head  and hearing protection, and some fitted clothing,
  • When cutting or drilling a hole, be sure to start slowly. Do this before putting added pressure when you are already into the cut. Be sure that the pressure is controlled at all times. A good grip of the drill will do the trick. Avoid unnecessary movements when you are already in operation.
  • When the blade is already working its way to the hole, never stop the water flow. Just do not interrupt the rotation of the blade.
  • Never ever force the core bit into the material. This is important advice also if you are using other tools like the diamond blade.

If during operation the speed at which the blade cuts decreases, then stop and check for problems. If you spot any problem, then you must discontinue working and take a look at any damage if there is. Be sure you have it fixed before using it again. If it needs to be replaced, then don’t push it and just have it replaced.

That’s about it. In one of my future blog posts, I’ll give you some safety pointers when you are using a diamond core drill. Until then, be safe always! Remember that it is always good to have a working knowledge of any tool before you actually being using it.

How to Properly Use a Diamond Core Bit

In the past I have already showed you some uses of the diamond core bit, even gave you troubleshooting tips. But let me get to the basics of basics for this particular blog post.
So you know how to use a diamond core bit…or do you really?

As with any tool, a sufficient know how of the proper usage of a core bit is heavily important. I cannot overemphasize the importance of knowing the way around the tool you are holding.

Remember, you could endanger people’s health, even lives, if you wrongfully use a construction tool. The tool can be dangerous in itself already so you have to really make sure you know how to use it.

safety-use-of-diamond-core-bit

Tips in Using Diamond Core bit Properly

You have to remember that when drilling, there is an appropriate speed. It is very important that you conform to this as achieving optimum result will depend on it. The reason the speed range of every drill is optimized is to get the most of every drilling project. There is a recommended speed for a specific drilling diameter. You will know this by personally asking the store staff or calling the manufacturer or dealer.

Of course the manual is there for you to read, and when I say read you don’t just skim and do things as you know you should. I mean read thoroughly and examine. Everything you have to know about the tool is right there. It may even include pointers and recommendations for different projects. Proceeding to use the diamond core bit with little knowledge is just not right.

Irrigation is very important when using a diamond core bit. You use water as a coolant so the diamond segments don’t overheat. You do it constantly in operation. The water’s job is to disperse the dust and other particles out the drill hole. Dust buildup can cause the diamond core bit to wear out so by using water, you are actually prolonging the life of your tool.

Different jobs require different amounts of water. For vertical drilling, less water may be needed, as opposed to horizontal drilling for the reason that water flows straight out the drill hole. For drilling a hole in a relatively short period of time, as in a reinforcing steel, you also do not need as much water because on this case, water is generally needed almost entirely for cooling, not for dispersing dust.

Be sure you know the basics when using any tool. Do it right and your diamond blade will last longer than expected.

The Fire Scene: Preventing Casualties

Fire is one of the most devastating disasters that can happen to your home. In a couple of hours, everything that you have ever worked for may be reduced to ashes. The worse thing that could happen is a family member being included on the list of casualties.

Good thing the country generally has a decent fire rescue system, with fire departments that have competent, highly qualified firefighters who use reliable, top-of-the-line tools like the fire rescue diamond blade.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), upon recommendations from the US Consumers Product Safety Commission, the US Fire Administration, and the National Fire Protection Agency, enlisted these all-important fire deaths- and injuries- prevention tips:

-    Never leave food unattended on a stove.

-    Keep cooking areas free of flammable objects (such as, potholders and towels).

-    Avoid wearing clothes with long, loose-fitting sleeves when cooking.
-    Never smoke in bed or leave burning cigarettes unattended.

-    Do not empty smoldering ashes in a trash can, and keep ashtrays away from upholstered furniture and curtains.

-    Never place portable space heaters near flammable materials (such as, drapery).

-    Keep all matches and lighters out of reach of children. Store them up high, preferably in a locked cabinet.

-    Install smoke alarms on every floor of the home, including the basement, and particularly near rooms in which people sleep.

-    Use long-life smoke alarms with lithium-powered batteries and hush buttons, which allow persons to stop false alarms quickly. If long-life alarms are not available, use regular alarms, and replace the batteries annually.

-    Test all smoke alarms every month to ensure they work properly.

-    Devise a family fire escape plan and practice it every 6 months. In the plan, describe at least two different ways each family member can escape every room, and designate a safe place in front of the home for family members to meet after escaping a fire.

-    If possible, install or retrofit fire sprinklers into home.

You can afford to lose the priciest furniture in your home but never a loved one. Be sure you heed these tips to avoid any casualty.

Come to think of it. Your home symbolizes many things dear to you. Just thinking about it crumbling down and turning into ashes isn’t the best thing in the world. As a parting tip, be sure everyone in the family knows the number of the fire department in case of emergency.

How to Maintain the Luster of Your Laminate Flooring

Laminate flooring is known for being durable and easy to maintain. That said, it is still not spared from damages, which is why it is important that you know how to keep its luster.

Here are a few tips you may wanna observe when maintaining your Laminate Flooring:

laminate-flooring
Image: nancyafink

Firstly, if you have to repair your tiles, be sure you know what to do. Otherwise just hire a professional to do it for you. If you have to bore a hole, for example, use a diamond drill and a diamond core bit and do a little research so you know how it’s done.

The legs of the furniture are one of the most common causes of scratches on laminate flooring. Sometimes we get so lazy and careless that instead of lifting the furniture, we drag them when we want to put them to another place. To cover this problem, install felt pads at the foot of the furniture. Laminate flooring may be scratch-resistant but they aren’t scratch-proof – those are two different things. It would be good to use a dolly if you have one in the house.

In areas of heavy foot traffic, you’re gonna need throw rubs for cover. Don’t get the kind with the rubber backs though as it can discolor your flooring. Those with soft pads are a good choice. Another thing: You are welcome to walk around, but your high heels are not. Remember they can put enough pressure to destroy your flooring when done excessively.

Avoid spills. When you spill something on your flooring, be sure you clean it right away as the liquid may penetrate the joints and damage the tiles. As much as possible, keep the flooring dry. When wiping off stains, use a soft cloth or sponge. Also, be sure you clean it properly and never use soap-based detergents. Regular cleaning is good for your flooring. This may surprise you but wax should not be applied to your laminate flooring as it may dull its luster.

Be extra careful if you have pets at home. Since really nothing can prevent pets from running around, make sure their fingernails are trimmed so scratches wouldn’t be much of a problem.

Walking around the house barefoot will serve you right as particles from your shoes or slippers may damage your flooring. If you don’t feel like going barefoot, at least have a doormat where people can shed off dust from their feet before entering your home.

Common Mistakes in the Usage of Diamond Blades

As with any tool, it is very important that you have sufficient knowledge when using a diamond blade, this I can never overstate. All the proper care must be observed, keep that in mind.

usage-diamond-blade

Especially for first timers, it is easy to get overeager when using a diamond blade. One should know that it requires patience and enough know-how to be able to use it properly. A common mistake, which I will discuss later, is putting excessive pressure to the point that you are already destroying the material. Other common mistakes done when using a diamond blade are as follows:

You see the manual is there for a purpose. It is actually meant to be read, understood, and applied. Follow the instructions and the chances of you having troubles with the blade will be greatly reduced. Funny how many people don’t read manuals when it’s the one thing that will educate them about usage. What’s worse is that there are people who instantly throw the packaging away, along with the manual. My advice is to not throw it away so that you can always get back to it if you have to.

Check for wears only before and after use. Inspecting the blade for any damage is surely beneficial. But you don’t just inspect before and after use. Even while you are using it, you should be aware that it may get damaged, and when it does, quit using it to avoid further damage and avoid any injury.

Apply only for intended use. Because the diamond blade is such a versatile tool, some people feel that it can cut almost anything. Yes it is a multi-purpose tool but never ever use it to cut wood. If you do, you are putting unnecessary pressure on the blade. Diamond blades are of course used to cut through hard materials like concrete, brick, granite, or marble.

Neglect for safety gears and equipment. There will always be people who will give safety a pass. My advice is to not be like them. Prove that you know better by wearing the proper safety gears when using diamond blades. Be sure you have safety goggles, gloves, dust mask, and the likes. Remember that the reasons why those people have a disregard for safety can be summed up in one word – ignorance.

Please take note of these common mistakes and heed the pieces of advice I managed to sneak in. Take care, people!

Specific Safety Guidelines for Cup Wheel Usage (part 2)

In one of my previous blog posts, I shared with you some tips about the safety usage of diamond cup wheel. With the different accidents that can happen, you really should know the tool you have on your hand.

safety-guidelines-cup-wheel

Even if the store personnel are nice enough to give you tips, you owe it to yourself and the people around you to have a more profound understanding of tools like the diamond cup wheel. Here are a few more tips so you will be able to use the tool without harming yourself or anyone else:

Focus on the job

When using the diamond cup wheel, you should keep 100% concentration into it. It is a heavy-duty equipment, therefore you need all the focus in the world when using it. Using it while doing something else, like looking after your kids or your pets can be dangerous. Better yet, do not allow your kids to be in the workshop. They are the last thing you want harmed. Just don’t think of any other things aside from what you are doing. Avoiding any kind of distraction is a must when dealing with power tools.

Turn it off when not in use

A cup wheel that continues to run even if you’re done with it may injure people in the work place. Imagine your kids getting curious and trying to touch the wheel. No, you’re not gonna let that happen of course. Even adults, those who haven’t even tried using a cup wheel, may be drawn to touch it and use it without your knowledge. It’s been said time again: you need to have sufficient knowledge about the tool to be able to use it correctly without inflicting harm to you or others.

Sufficient lighting in the work area

Be sure your work area is well-lit so you can clearly see what you are doing. Be sure the lighting is sufficient because a dimly lit area could spell a whole lot of trouble. A good, powerful lamp is good as it may also help you keep your concentration since it can be focused on a particular spot.

Here goes another set of safety guidelines for the proper usage of a cup wheel. Hopefully you don’t ignore these tips as they are meant to keep you away from harm, while slowly but surely teaching you how to become an expert DIYer.

Specific Safety Guidelines for Cup Wheel Usage (part 1)

When we buy any tool, most store personnel will be nice enough to inform us about the safety usage of that particular tool. This is apart from the manufacturer’s tips written on the manual.

safety-guidelines-cup-wheel

Still we may not have a solid grasp of safety until we start using the tool. Here are a few more tips on how to keep you (and the people around you) safe when doing some concrete grinding:

Read the manual

Thoroughly read, and not just skim on the manual. Remember, the manual is there for a purpose. It is meant to point you in the right direction. It aims to help the tool achieve a longer life, as well as to keep you safe when using it. Oftentimes, people just rely on tips from other people about product usage. Well let me tell you that even experienced DIYers and professionals read manuals.

Check the tool regularly

Store the grinder and the cup wheel right to avoid any damage when it’s not in use. Look for damages before using it again. Other people overlook the need for a little checkup simply because they know that the tools were properly stored. Well don’t get too complacent, especially when the tools are inactive for longer periods of time. Believe it or not, they still look at the manual every so often for a little review.

Protect yourself!

Always wear safety gears. A decent eye and ear protection should be fine – goggles to keep particles from getting into your eyes and ear muffs or plugs to protect yourself from the high noise level, as well as from particles. In the workplace, you shouldn’t be wearing jewelry and loose clothing. Wearing hair net is good too to avoid your hair from entangling with tool when it’s being used.

Store right

Be sure you store your cup wheel the right way, and that’s in a place where it is safe from damages. Be sure it’s away from pointed tools, and of course, from children. A small space to isolate the cup wheel and a clutter-free work space will really be a big help. Keep in mind that there is always the danger of debris falling into it and dust forming on the cup wheel.

Here they are for now. More will come in the next few articles, including safety guidelines for using other tools. Here’s to a safer work place. Ciao!

What is the Proper Attire When Woodworking?

Your diamond tools like diamond core bit aren’t the only things you must prepare if you are working on a home improvement project. Even the clothes that you wear have something to do with it.

Wearing the right clothing is also important for safety purposes. Don’t worry, we won’t be mixing and matching designer clothes here. We’ll have none of that.

proper-construction-attire

Like I said, we need to have the right type of clothes when doing some woodwork or any type of construction project to observe safety.

Tips on Choosing Proper Construction Attire

  • Don’t wear loose clothing.

When doing construction, never wear loose clothing as they may get caught into any machine. Keep in mind that many construction injuries stem from this. Obviously it can cause a whole lot of trouble as you continue with your job.

Be sure, too, that the clothes you’re wearing cover your skin especially if you are working under the sun. If you want, you can buy one of those arm and leg warmers if they make you feel more comfortable when working. A woodworker’s apron should also be comfortable and relevant.
  • When doing some wood turning, don’t just wear what is comfortable for you.

I mean, sure it makes you feel easier to move. But wearing a shirt and shorts may not be good for the job as falling debris and other elements can contact with your skin and may cause you unimaginable problems in the future. For this type of work, the best attire is a long-sleeved shirt coupled with long pants.

Notice how I am putting an emphasis on the skin. Not only is the skin most open to different kinds of dust particles, it is also quite overlooked by construction workers. Perhaps most of them feel that because it comes with the territory anyway so it shouldn’t be much of a concern.
  • Safety should be of utmost concern.

Keep in mind that while you feel most comfortable wearing a shirt, you have to learn that you’d be a lot safer when wearing a long-sleeved shirt. Wearing loose shirt is even worse so please, try to dress appropriately.

Do a little research and you’ll find that there are actually statistics that prove many an accident have happened at work sites where the workers don’t wear appropriate clothing. The lives you may save may not just be your own but also of those around you.

Hey more tips to come so please keep to this blog. Until then, you all be safe at the work place!

The Benefits of a Fencing System

In Europe, a fence is a staple in almost every household. In many parts of this wealthy continent it’s almost impossible to see a neighborhood with a single house that doesn’t have a fencing system.

Such is not the case in the US. Depending on the location, a fencing system is really not a popular part of houses. Many don’t feel the need to install fence for security reasons because for them a security alarm system will suffice. There are also community restriction codes. A few even doubt the importance of it for the reason that burglars can climb over it anyway. But then there are those who install fencing system because they fully know its importance.

Here are some of the benefits of Fencing System:

Privacy

At first look a fence sets boundaries and for some this is enough reason to install some on their home. Depending on how and where it is installed, it can even block noise from the outside. Especially in this day and age, privacy seems to have become elusive.

Security

This is another obvious benefit of a fence. When your home is surrounded by fence, burglars will think twice of breaking in. Yes, they may easily climb, but then again the task would be much harder especially that they don’t know what to expect when they get in. As aforementioned, a good alarm system will certainly be a big help.

Easy maintenance

As homeowner you should choose the right fencing material for your needs and budget. There are many kinds of materials available like wood, metal, and vinyl. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. Metal and vinyl, for example, are easier to maintain. Wood gives off that elegant appeal but is harder to maintain. Be sure you got your power tools ready such as diamond core bit and saw blades in case you need some work done.

Aesthetic appeal

A nice fencing system will add style to your home. A little research on the different types of fencing material should help you decide which one to purchase. Once you have chosen the right one for your home, you may go all out in decorating your façade, garden, whatever it is you want done. It’s your home… the possibilities are endless. Just be sure you won’t be at loggerheads with any of your neighbors.

Be Safe Around Diamond Cup Wheel!

As you may already know, a diamond cup wheel has a whole lot of uses, not just in big construction projects but also in our everyday lives.

One example is the repair of sidewalks. Sidewalks need to be repaired because of persons with disabilities who also pass through them. Pathways that are not level can cause them serious trouble. That and the fact that cup wheels help beautify sidewalks in the process. For the same smoothing purpose, a diamond cup wheel also comes in handy in making your pavements level. Of course there are many other uses for the cup wheel and this I will tackle in future blogs.

Safety Measures for Using Diamond Cup Wheel

The purpose of this blog is to remind you guys of safety measures when you are working with a diamond cup wheel. As they always say, better safe than sorry. You don’t want to get anyone injured for a simple mistake that could have been prevented.

-    Take note of manufacturer’s safety instructions. These pointers are there for a reason. Be reminded that the product you are holding underwent an entire prototyping process so the manufacturers sure know what they are talking about. They are there to keep us safe in handling the product.

-    Check the blade’s maximum surface and revolutions per minute. This should be in relation to the wheel’s operating speed. To protect the operator, it is very important that the guards are in the right position on the wheel.

-    Don’t be stubborn and wear the proper safety gears and equipment. Use eye protection as well as hearing protection. By now you may already know how dangerous dust is so you better wear face mask. Whether or not you are working on a wide area, you just have to protect your lungs especially when you are in an enclosed place.

Utmost care is needed when using any power tool, and that includes cup wheels. If we neglect any of these, be prepared to suffer the consequences. Don’t be complacent. In any construction site, it’s not just your life that can get in danger, but also the lives of other people.

Remember this: power tools like diamond cup wheels are around to help us with work and make our lives a whole lot easier. Treat them well and they will exhibit longevity. Abuse them and they may just fire right back at us.

Diamond Blade is a Man’s Best Friend

Who says diamonds are just girls’ best friend? Because diamonds are equated as engagement rings for women this does not mean that diamonds have no used for men either. Though there are cufflinks with a diamond or two for men, there is another use for diamonds as well. They are not just ornament but they can also be used for construction as power tools such as diamond core bit and diamond blades. They can be easily used by construction workers for cutting any materials. It is a fact that diamonds are actually for both men and women and they can be used not just as an ornament but for other useful activities as well.

Diamonds have always been used in conjunction with precious metals as jewelry. They have been used for hundreds of years in Europe as a means to show one’s social standing but studies show that they have been used thousands of years before that for a different matter all together. Diamonds were used in China to polish ceremonial burial axes. In ancient China, burying of the dead is a serious business because of their patriarchal society. They value their ancestors hence they must be given proper burial. Most burial axes were made of a very strong material called corundum that can only be polished by diamonds. These axes are polished hard until it resembles a mirror before it can used by the Chinese in the old days. This finding just goes to show how good diamonds are in cutting objects.

Diamonds are also considered one of the hardest stones to cut and because of that characteristic; it then became useful for cutting. Gem stones were very hut to cut by other means except with the use of diamonds. There are very few items that can cut hard materials but it is not impossible with a diamond. It is one of the precious stones that can cut any hard material that is why it is now used for industrial purposes.

Most saw blades in the past had difficulty in cutting objects and with the invention of other materials in construction like asphalt, ceramics, stones, concrete, bricks, glass, and other hard materials, it has become more difficult. However, with the invention of the diamond blade, the difficulty of cutting abrasive materials is a thing of the past. This type of blade is encrusted with diamonds for perfect cutting precision. It is not impossible to cut any object with the use of this kind of blade.

A diamond blade comes in many shapes and sizes depending on the type of equipment it houses and depending on their use as well. It would be better to select the type of blade that would best fit a person’s need. Be it used for a major construction or for simple remodeling, there is a diamond blade that would fit anyone’s needs.
